Herculaneum: A Walk Up Cardo V

Let's pick up some speed and take a quick stroll up Cardo V, shall we? This section of Cardo V is shown above the House of the Great Portal on this map.
Here is a baker's shop, called a pistrinum in Italian. The oven is the igloo-shaped object in the foreground. The mill is the object in the background. This bakery is Pistrinum e Bottega and was owned by Sex. Patulcius Felix. It is the best preserved bakery in Herculaneum. There were quarters for donkeys, used to turn the mill, at the rear of the shop.
This is a multi-story Roman apartment building just to the left of Pistrinum e Bottega. Much of the second story of this building survived, complete with remnants of a bed.
A close-up of the beautiful woman out front.
Another snack bar. They are all over this city, with several in each block.
Note that each structure has a number that was obviously added during the excavations.
A beautiful shady spot that serves as a respite from the beautiful but warm day. The trees that have taken root in modern times are likely much the same as they were 2,000 years ago.
At this point, we'll take a leisurely stroll up Cardo V with no further description of the buildings. Enjoy
