Past Meets Future

Rarely do I give a train a second glance, but this fantastic shot graced the pages of an issue of the San Diego Union-Tribune this week, and I was intrigued. Our totally modern, futuristic San Diego downtown meets a major blast from the past, belching smoke and steam and no doubt making quite a racket.

Santa Fe 3751, built in 1927, was visiting our fair city, much to the delight of many of our citizens and visitors. It had traveled from Los Angeles to San Diego's Santa Fe Station.

Two brothers kept the dome car, The Silver Splendor, very tidy. This dome car is very similar to one on the Wine Train in Napa Valley. If you haven't spent an evening enjoying dinner and the Napa countryside in that dome car, well hustle yourself up there and do so.

A view of The Silver Splendor from another car.

Alas, 3751 could only spend a few short hours in San Diego before embarking on a return trip to Los Angeles.

...and it passes through Carlsbad on the trip back home. Please hurry back, 3751. We'd love to see you again.
